Sandplay Therapy
Sandplay therapy is a non-directive and primarily non-verbal form of psychotherapy. It allows individuals to work through emotional and spiritual issues, healing old wounds by engaging their inner lives. Sandplay therapy provides the space, freedom, and safety that bring forth the psyche’s capacity for self-healing. Because it is primarily nonverbal and transforms on a deep level, it has great success with children, as well as adults.
In dreams, and in expressive arts such as sandplay therapy, the psyche communicates in a language of symbols. These can be animals, people, colors, numbers, words, sounds, feelings, bodily sensations, or even life events that have meaningful coincidence. A symbol has a meaning that is unique to one’s own life, yet also linked to a deeper, collective, even religious context. Sandplay therapy is a form of active imagination that allows the unconscious to reveal itself through the use of symbols, leading to increased awareness and integration.
